Sustainability

The greenest container is one that already exists.

We are a small family business, not a company with a sustainability department. What follows is what we actually do, not what we would like to be seen to do.

What we do now

Six things, all of them already in place.

Solar panels across the container roofs

Containers reused, not built

Every container on our yards had a working life at sea first. Reusing one keeps around three and a half tonnes of steel out of the smelter, and means we did not pour a concrete building to replace it.

No heating, no cooling

Steel containers need neither. That removes the single largest energy cost that conventional indoor storage carries, and it is why our prices hold steady when energy prices do not.

LED throughout

Every light across the three yards is LED on a motion sensor. Nothing burns through the night lighting an empty row.

Solar at Woolwich

Panels on the office roof cover the site office, the gates and the CCTV through daylight hours.

A reuse shelf, not a skip

Boxes and packing materials left behind in good condition go on a shelf by the office for the next customer to take free. It saves them money and keeps usable cardboard out of the bin.

Rainwater for washing down

Collected off the container roofs and used for washing yards and vehicles rather than mains water.

Our green commitment

What we are working on next.

These are not done yet, so we are listing them as plans rather than achievements.

Solar at Charlton and ChessingtonQuoted, planned for next year
An EV charger at each yardUnder consideration, depends on the supply
Measuring our footprint properlyWe want a number before we make claims about one
We have deliberately not called ourselves carbon neutral or put a percentage on anything. We have not measured it yet, and we would rather say nothing than say something we cannot evidence.

Things you can do too

  • —Take boxes from the reuse shelf instead of buying new ones.
  • —Bring your boxes back when you move out so the next person can use them.
  • —Take the right size first time — a second trip across London costs more than the extra space.
  • —Combine a removal and a container in one booking so one van does one journey.
