Storing between exchange and completion

Chains slip. Here is how to keep your things safe for a few weeks without paying for a month you do not use, and without being at the mercy of a date that keeps moving.

The gap between moving out and moving in is the single most common reason people ring us. Sometimes it is three days, sometimes it is six weeks, and almost nobody knows which when they first call.

Book before you know the date

Reserve a container as soon as you exchange. It costs nothing, holds for seven days, and you can move the date. The worst position to be in is a van loaded on Friday afternoon and nowhere to put it.

You pay for the days you use

The minimum stay is a month, but if your completion comes through early you give seven days notice and we charge pro rata from there. You are not locked into a second month because the chain moved.

Pack for a short stay differently

If it is only a few weeks, keep everything you will need in that period out of the container entirely — a fortnight of clothes, chargers, paperwork, the kettle. People put all of it in storage on the Friday and are back on the Monday morning digging for a phone charger.

Think about the second move

Load the container in the order you will want to unload it at the new house. Kitchen things together, bedroom things together, and the first-night box last in so it comes out first.

If the chain collapses

Then you simply stay. Nothing to re-sign, no new contract, the same monthly price. That is the point of not tying people in.
